Software Engineer (Fresher) cover letter example

For B.Tech / MCA graduates applying to their first software role through campus or off-campus drives.

What to highlight

  • Lead with one project you built end to end, not a list of languages.
  • Mention problem-solving proof: coding contest ranks, LeetCode count, or a hard bug you fixed.
  • Show you can learn their stack quickly; name one thing you taught yourself.

Example letter

Dear Hiring Manager,

I am applying for the Software Engineer (Fresher) role. I graduated in Computer Science with a CGPA of 8.1, and in my final year I built and deployed a placement-tracking web app that 600 students in my college used during the recruitment season.

I wrote that app in Java with Spring Boot and MySQL, designed its REST APIs, and cut the main dashboard query from four seconds to under one by adding indexes and pagination. Alongside coursework I solved more than 350 problems on LeetCode and reached the top 15 percent in two CodeChef contests, which taught me to write correct code under time pressure and to test edge cases before I ship.

Your role asks for strong fundamentals in data structures, object-oriented design and clean code, and that is where I have spent most of my effort. I learn new stacks quickly; I picked up Docker in a week to containerise my project. I would value the chance to discuss how I can contribute to your engineering team.

Sincerely,
[Your name]
